Introduction

The Marin Humane Society (MHS) is aOrgName that has been rescuing, rehabilitating and rehoming animals in need since 1907. We are the only animal shelter serving Marin County, one of the most populous and wealthiest counties in California. Each year, we take in approximately 4,000 dogs, cats, rabbits,birds and horses in need of our help.

Our mission is to promote the humane treatment of animals and to prevent cruelty and suffering. We do this through rescue and rehabilitation, adoptions, education and prevention programs.

MHS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that relies on the generosity of our donors to fund our lifesaving work. We are not affiliated with any other organization and do not receive any government funding.

The Marin Humane Society’s Services

The Marin Humane Society offers a variety of services to the Marin community and beyond. We offer adoption services, humane education opportunities, spay and neuter services, and much more. Our goal is to create a safe and humane community for all animals, and we’re grateful for the support of our donors, volunteers, staff, and the Marin community.

The Marin Humane Society’s Adoption Process

The Marin Humane Society has a variety of animals available for adoption, from dogs and cats to rabbits and reptiles. There is an adoption process that potential adopters must go through in order to ensure that the animal is going to a good home.

The first step is to fill out an adoption application. This can be done online or in person at the shelter. The application asks questions about your living situation, whether you have other pets, and what kind of experience you have with animals. Once the application is submitted, a staff member will review it and contact you to set up an appointment for a meet-and-greet with the animal you are interested in adopting.

At the meet-and-greet, you will have a chance to spend some time with the animal to see if it is a good fit for your home. If everything goes well, the next step is to complete the adoption paperwork and pay the adoption fee. The Marin Humane Society has a standard adoption fee for all animals, but there may be additional fees for things like spaying/neutering or microchipping.

After the adoption is complete, you will receive an adopter’s packet which includes information on care and training, as well as contact information for our Behavior Helpline should you need any assistance after taking your new furry friend home.

The Marin Humane Society’s Foster Program

The Marin Humane Society’s Foster Program offers a temporary home to animals who are not yet ready for adoption. By opening your home to an animal in need, you are giving that animal a second chance at finding a forever home.

As a Foster Care Provider, you will be responsible for providing food, water, shelter, and love to your foster animal. You will also be responsible for bringing your foster animal to Marin Humane Society for all adoption counseling appointments and veterinary visits.

If you are interested in becoming a Foster Care Provider, please fill out an application and return it to the Adoptions Department.

The Marin Humane Society’s Volunteer Opportunities

The Marin Humane Society offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for people who want to help animals in need. From walking dogs and caring for cats to helping with special events and fundraising, there’s a way for everyone to get involved.

The first step is to attend a Volunteer Orientation, where you’ll learn more about the Marin Humane Society and the different ways you can help. Orientations are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 6:00 pm at our Novato Shelter (map).

Once you’ve attended an orientation and decided which type of volunteering you’d like to do, you’ll need to complete a Volunteer Application form. Once your application has been reviewed and approved, we’ll set up a time for you to come in for a brief training session. After that, you’re ready to start volunteering!
