The Society of Mary: Who We Are
The Society of Mary is a religious congregation of Catholic priests and brothers founded in 1817 by Blessed Peterchanel, a young French diocesan priest. The Marists, as they are called, are faith-filled men dedicated to making Jesus Christ known and loved through the education of youth and the evangelization of cultures.
With more than 4,000 members in over 60 countries, the Society of Mary is a truly international congregation. Young men from many different cultures and countries are drawn to us because they recognize in our way of life an authentic expression of the Gospel message.
Our community life is based on prayer, fraternity and service. As Marists we share our lives together in community so that we can more effectively evangelize young people and proclaim the Gospel to all peoples.
We are committed to living simple lives in order that we may better serve those who are poor and marginalized. We believe that Jesus is present in all people, especially those who suffer most deeply. It is our task, then, to bring the Good News of God’s love to them through our words and actions.
The Society of Mary: Our History
The Society of Mary is a religious congregation of priests and brothers within the Catholic Church. We are sometimes called Marianists or simply “the Society.” Our founder, Blessed William Joseph Chaminade, was born in France in 1761. Throughout his life, he was committed to the Church’s mission of evangelization, working to rejuvenate the Catholic faith in France after the French Revolution.
In 1817, Blessed Chaminade founded the Society of Mary as a community of religious men dedicated to carrying out the Church’s evangelical mission. Today, Marianists can be found serving in more than 50 countries around the world. We work in a wide variety of ministries, including education, parish ministry, chaplaincy and spiritual formation.
The Society of Mary is a part of the larger Catholic Church. We are under the jurisdiction of the Pope and governed by our own Constitutions and statutes. Our members take vows of chastity, poverty and obedience and live in community according to our charism, or spiritual orientation.
The Society of Mary: Our Beliefs
The Society of Mary is a Marian Society founded in 1881 by Father John Eudes Bierne, SM. We are a group of Marianists who strive to live out theCharism of the Holy Apostles, Saint Peter and Saint Paul, as expressed in the Marianist Pledge. As Marianists, we believe that Mary, the Mother of God, is our spiritual Mother who intercedes for us before her Son. We also believe that the Blessed Virgin Mary appears to us daily in the mystery of the eucharist and continues her motherly care for us.
The Society of Mary: Our Mission
The Society of Mary is a congregation of brothers and priests within the Catholic Church. We are Marianists, a religious family founded by Blessed William Joseph Chaminade in the city of Bordeaux, France, in 1817.
The Society of Mary is missionary by nature. As such, we are present in more than fifty countries on six continents. Our primary mission is to proclaim Jesus Christ, living and working with those most in need and collaborating with others who labor for justice and peace.
We are united to the Church and loyal to the Pope, yet independent in our governance. Our general superior resides in Rome but our provinces and regions are found throughout the world.
