Why Black Label Society is important
Black Label Society is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California formed in 1998 by Zakk Wylde. The band has, since its inception, released ten studio albums, two live albums, two compilations, one DVD, and three EPs. Black Label Society is named after Wylde’s alcoholic beverage of choice, Jack Daniel’s “Old No. 7” Tennessee Whiskey.
Black Label Society has been classified under multiple genres of heavy music. The first several albums released by the band all coreleased through Spitfire Records were categorized as southern rock/metal with low tuned guitars and a southern influenced rowdy swagger. More recent releases have strayed away from this sound and have taken on more of a traditional heavy metal sound with higher pitched guitars while still retaining some of the southern rock influences. Influences from other genres are also present on some releases by the band such as blues on 1919 Eternal and hammer horror films on Mafia.
The membership of Black Label Society has constantly rotated throughout the years with many members leaving or being fired from the band only to return later on. As a result, frontman and founder Zakk Wylde is the only remaining founding member in the current lineup which features John “Jed” Simon on guitar, Jeff Fabb on drums and Chad Szeliga on drums. Despite this instability in membership changes, Black Label Society continue to tour and release new material to critical acclaim with their most recent album Grimmest Hits reaching number one on Billboard’s US Hard Rock chart in 2018.
